our mission
Big Country VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) is a coalition of nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, government agencies, and community partners dedicated to mitigating and alleviating the impact of disasters across 19 counties in West Central Texas. The organization serves as a forum to promote cooperation, communication, coordination, and collaboration—the four guiding principles of VOAD—to ensure a more efficient and effective response to disasters.
Who We Serve
Big Country VOAD provides disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation services across 19 counties in the Big Country region:
Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Fisher, Haskell, Jones, Kent, Knox, Mitchell, Nolan, Runnels, Scurry, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Taylor, and Throckmorton.
Our Mission & Impact
Founded in 2003, Big Country VOAD has grown to include over 30 member organizations, each contributing unique resources and expertise to disaster relief efforts. The coalition works to:
Streamline volunteer management to ensure that skilled volunteers are deployed where they are needed most.
Maximize the impact of donations by coordinating the collection and distribution of supplies and equipment.
Enhance disaster response and recovery efforts by reducing duplication of services and ensuring that aid reaches those most in need.
Improve disaster preparedness through education and training initiatives that strengthen community resilience.
As a local VOAD, Big Country VOAD operates within the broader National VOAD (NVOAD) network, which was established in 1970 to improve disaster response coordination across the country. By following best practices and leveraging partnerships, Big Country VOAD plays a critical role in helping communities recover from wildfires, floods, tornadoes, and other crises.
